PHOENIX TRUCKING- 'I BELIEVE IN DEMOCRACY UP TO A POINT': DEMOCRATIZING MANAGEMENT HIERARCHIES |
Author : FRANCES A. VIGGIAN |
Abstract | Full Text |
Abstract :Scholarly work examining democratic organizational experiments is well known among a small international circle of economists, sociologists, anthropologists and organization theorists but empirical evidence on the organizational behavior of such firms is limited. This ethnographic study of a successful espousedly democratic company provides such in-depth qualitative data. A main finding of this study is that tacit conventional norms about ownership and control can undermine successful creation and maintenance of new goals, expectations and actions of individuals and groups intending to create a democratic workplace. Tension between the ideal of equal ownership and the reality of varying individual contributions to success caused lengthy debates about the practical meaning a democratized management hierarchy. Highlighting conceptual limits, the story of Phoenix Trucking points to challenges in the re-design of management - for example, equity and other prerogatives, compensation, equality and trust - necessary for implementing a 21st century democratic consensus at work. |
